The eNotes Blog Poes 5 Most Poe-trifyingPoems
Poes 5 Most Poe-trifyingPoems ââ¬Å"Aloneâ⬠On October 7th, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe, the bard of death and mystery, died mysteriously. His distinctive poems and stories, which range from spooky ghost verses to spine-tingling murder thrillers, have made their mark on writers and readers ever since. To honor the spirit of Poe, weââ¬â¢ve pulled together five of his most frightening poems, all of which deliver major chills in small packages. ââ¬Å"Aloneâ⬠From childhoodââ¬â¢s hour I have not been As others were- I have not seen As others saw- I could not bring My passions from a common spring- ââ¬Å"Aloneâ⬠begins in a contemplative, almost confessional tone. The speaker shares his ââ¬Å"most stormy life,â⬠including his lifelong feelings of loneliness and separation from the rest of the world. As the poem reaches its conclusion, however, the confession transforms into a hair-raising, otherworldly visionâ⬠¦ I wonââ¬â¢t spoil the rest for you! The Bells Keeping time, time, time, à à à à à à à à In a sort of Runic rhyme, To the tintinabulation that so musically wells à à à à à à From the bells, bells, bells, bells, à à à à à à à à à à à à à à Bells, bells, bells- à From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells. ââ¬Å"The Bellsâ⬠is one of the most singular poems ever written. In four sections, it describes the sounds of tolling bells, expressed through dense onomatopoeia and repetition. At first, the bells chime out lightheartedly, telling of ââ¬Å"a world of merriment.â⬠Poe, however, cannot stay in such a world, and so by the final sections, the bells ring out with despair and ghoulish terror. Youââ¬â¢ll never hear bells the same way again. à A Dream Within a Dream I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand - How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep - while I weep! ââ¬Å"A Dream Within a Dreamâ⬠is deeply haunting, but not because dungeons full of ghosts burst open or winged demons wheel through the air with burning swords (that would be awesome, though). The poem is haunting because the speaker expresses a paranoia that his life is an unreal dream from which he cannot escape. If you like your spooks with a philosophical twist, this poem is for you. The Raven ââ¬Å"Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!â⬠I shrieked, upstarting- ââ¬Å"Get thee back into the tempest and the Nightââ¬â¢s Plutonian shore! Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! Leave my loneliness unbroken!- quit the bust above my door! Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!â⬠à à à à à à Quoth the Raven ââ¬Å"Nevermore.â⬠If you know Poe, youââ¬â¢ve probably read ââ¬Å"The Raven,â⬠his most famous poem. On a dark and stormy night, a grieving young man is visited by a cryptic corvid, who answers his desperate questions with an unforgettable, dream-crushing croak. Will the young man ever again see his dead love Lenore? ââ¬Å"Quoth the Raven ââ¬ËNevermore.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ Gather your friends at midnight and read this riotous fright-fest aloud by candlelight. And good luck trying to sleep afterwards. The Spirits of the Dead Thy soul shall find itself alone ââ¬â¢Mid dark thoughts of the gray tombstone- Not one, of all the crowd, to pry Into thine hour of secrecy. For those who enjoy wandering through misty graveyards at night, ââ¬Å"The Spirits of the Deadâ⬠is for you. Poe brings the inky darkness to life and stirs the corpses from their rest into a silent communion. Soak in the dismal scene: the frowning night, the disdainful stars on their high thrones, the mysteries of the dead. Poe truly captures the heart of Halloween in this slow-burning spooktacular.

Psychosocial and Ethical Issues Personal Statement
Psychosocial and Ethical Issues - Personal Statement Example In this assignment, the psychosocial and ethical issues involved in the disease and in the possible management of such patients will be analysed through a reflective account. Case: This is a little girl of age 9, suffering from a leukaemia. She is attending this hospital for followup chemotherapy. Her mother accompanies her every time, and she seems to be very supportive to her daughter throughout these treatment cycles. Ethical Issues: Every patients and care involve some ethical issues. Pediatric patients such as this go through grueling rituals of management in the clinical setting. Quite often, these involve multidisciplinary workup and management. In the clinical situation, these are data of various categories and their interpretations. Changes in the clinical conditions and other parameters are discussed in order to design a therapy that suits best to the clinical conditions of these children. These situations are often grappled with ethical issues which tend to neglect the patient and the physician perspectives, even though they may be ethically sound. This is a chronic condition, and the mechanism of coping with such a severe disease for a little child like her is always a problem, and it is more so for the family or the mother. The patient has her own rights, but the fact that the patient is a dependent member of the family, and therefore, many of her decisions will be made by the physician s and the family, adjusting to her growing competence and maturity. It is very evident that the medical professional will have to act with fewer presumed limits on their commitment of care. The principles of beneficence may counteract with the principle of autonomy in case of this pediatric patient. Obviously, this would vary from those in case of adult patients. It is to be noted that cancer is no longer that deadly. With tremendous improvement in medications and technologies, the outcome is no that poor. All these have led to changes in the ways the physicians communicate with their patients. Truth telling perhaps is the most important ethical responsibility of a healthcare professional. Although truth is dynamic in nature, truth about a patient's condition is a combination of both subjective and objective factors. It also involves psychosocial aspects as to how it is interpreted by the patient and the physician. This matter is further complicated by the fact that the patient is a child. However, ethically, the healthcare professionals are bound to lead to honest transmission of what is accepted medical knowledge at a given time. This must accept the fact that the patient is not passive, rather an active participant in the decision making process, embodying autonomy. Since the child is just 9 years old with cancer, there is a high chance th at there would be considerable extent of paternalism. However, due to superior medical knowledge, the doctor may lead to medical benefit out of this, but that may not ensure patient benefit. However, the patient's mother who has been supportive to her may also do the same thing, and despite that, the doctor will have to depend on her. It is to be remembered that the patient, despite being a child, has her own value systems, cultural beliefs, and religious beliefs. In the changed scenario of the present time, a shared decision making is the rule of the hour. Moreover, the patient would want to assert autonomous control

The African Americans considered the trickster, such as Railroad Bill, the heroic figure who had the ability to influence their lives and have strived hard to flout the whites and bring in the reformation. The longest lived bad men were Stagolee who conflicted with Billy Delyon which symbolizes the fight of black manââ¬â¢s struggle for equality with whites.5 Despite of the injustices, the traditional practices were strictly followed by the superhuman figures, such as John Henry, banjo player, who had a beautiful baritone voice, and was the strongest, fastest, most powerful man working on the rails as a ââ¬Å"steel driverâ⬠. 6Shine who was a Stoker in the ship had the ability to save the lives of hundreds from the sunken Titanic and to oppose the powerful opponents. 7 There were super heroes who emerged victorious in the racial advancement. The Bacchae Essay -- essays research papers
In The Bacchae, Euripedes portrays the character of Pentheus as an ignorant, stubborn, and arrogant ruler. These character flaws accompanied with his foolish decisions set the stage for his tragic downfall. Pentheus' blatant disregard to all warnings and incidents, which prove that Dionysus is truly a god, lead him to his own death. In the end, his mistakes are unforgiving and his punishment is just. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Throughout the play, the audience cannot help but feel merciless towards Pentheus. In his opening scene, Pentheus does not heed the warnings bestowed upon him by Teiresias and Cadmus. Before Pentheus even meets Dionysus, Teiresias offers him wise advice: 'So, Pentheus listen to me. Do not mistake the rule of force for true power. Men are not shaped by force. Nor should you boast of wisdom, when everyone but you can see how sick your thoughts are. Instead, welcome this God to Thebes. Exalt him with wine, garland your head and join the Bacchic revels'(19). Cadmus carefully tries to persuade his grandson by adding, 'For even if you are right and this God is not a God, why say it? Why not call him one? You have everything to gain from such a lie'(20). Pentheus shows no respect for the elderly or their wisdom by replying, 'Go! Run to your Bacchic revels. I want none of your senile folly rubbing off on me!'(21). This response alone reveals a great deal about his disposition. He will not let any 'old fools' tell him what to do. However, it is ironic that Pentheus' rejection of the advice of these 'old fools' proves to be his first step towards his fatal end. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã The next scene brings Pentheus and Dionysus face to face. Pentheus starts the conversation thinking he has the upper hand because he has more power over the situation. 'Untie his hands. Now I have him in my net, no amount of agile tricks can help him slip away' (25). However, it is clear to the audience that Dionysus is in control. He is provoking Pentheus by responding with quick, saucy remarks. 'Those who look for filth, can find at the height of noon' (28). Pentheus becomes frustrated. He needs to feel in control so he begins to hurl threats at Dionysus, 'I'll throw you in my dungeon.' Throughout this scene, Dionysus drops numerous hints that he is indeed the son of Zeus, 'He (Dionysus) is here now. He sees what is being done to me' (29). He for... ...gh. He has given Pentheus numerous warnings and opportunities to obey and worship him. Pentheus, due to his exceeding incompetence, has overlooked all of them. Because of his refusal to conform, he deserves punishment and it is a fate the audience has come to welcome. Dionysus now takes control over Pentheus and his all his actions. He humiliates Pentheus by dressing him in women's dress and parading him throughout Thebes. Dionysus then leads him up to Mount Cithaeron where he is caught spying on the Bacchae by his crazed mother, Agave. She proceeds to tear him to shreds with her bare hands. This is the end for Pentheus, and ultimately, due to his constant ignorance, a just death. Although the punishment may seem rather harsh, the audience is appeased by Pentheus' death. Pentheus is incapable of making any sensible decisions. His arrogance and controlling nature is apparent in every action and choice he makes. Pentheus rejects so many hints and opportunities to realize Dionysus' real identity. In his refusal to pick up the signals, he accepts his fate: death by the hands of his own mother. It is almost as if his death, through his refusal to act sensibly, is a form of suicide.

Hamlet and Revenge
In what ways, and how effectively do you think Shakespeare presents the theme of revenge In Hamlet ââ¬Å"Revenge is sweet but you got to stay alive to taste itâ⬠composed by David and Leigh Deeding is a beautiful way revenge can be illustrated. By definition, revenge is a legitimate response to political, family, personal or legal transgression. This act of supposed justice is epically epitomized in ââ¬Å"William Shakespearean Hamletâ⬠, arguably the greatest drama of all time.Being a revenge tragedy, William Shakespeare draws on interiorly, external and internal conflict as well as moral justification to illustrate a Isaac of Images and In doing so, demonstrates the dichotomy of whether or not revenge is as simple as it seems to be. The concept of a revenge tragedy is evoked when we are in the presence of a character who is ready to lay down his life, If need be, to secure one thing ââ¬â his sense of personal dignity. This Is seen by Hamlet as he, with great passion à ¢â¬â schemes to kill Claudia. This scheme arises due to the murder of his father, who was poisoned by Claudia whilst he was asleep, and to claim the throne via marriage to Gertrude. In his scheme to kill Claudia, Hamlet wishes to avenge his father under direction of the host of King Hamlet and supposedly bring peace to himself. Shakespeare uses ghosts as an external influence on Hamlet to initiate the revenge. The ghost seen in act one is can be seen as a catalyst in speeding up revenge process. Hamlet, after his father's death is full of melancholy and wishes to suicide however refrains from doing so only because it is a sin.In Hamlet's first soliloquy we see no drive for him to take revenge but rather a clutter of ââ¬Ëexplicitly salty thoughts which are disorganized. He, in all fury curses the current state of politics and family Hyannis as an ââ¬Å"Incestuousâ⬠and manipulative man rules the state, and his mother In all ââ¬Å"frailty' naively agrees to marry him. This soliloquy is full of thought rather than action however the ghost gives Hamlet a motive and application for his emotions. Interestingly, Hamlet requires tangible Justification to continue his plot on Claudia. With instruction from the ghost ââ¬â a supernatural being in which the Elizabethan time saw as a reason alone to take action in pursuit for revenge, Hamlet struggles to comes to terms with its justification. Suspicion beforehand of Claudia being the elliptic, furthered with the ghost's confirmation, Hamlet still puts upon an antic disposition to seek confirmation. This Is due to his moral Justification as he becomes skeptical in his approach. The only thing Hamlet wishes to secure in taking his revenge against Claudia is his own sense of personal dignity and in doing so over complicates a supposed simple task of revenge. This is the substance that makes Hamlet a tragic hero. Because he contemplates and lays poise in balancing moral righteousness, his tragic flaw is exposed. Shakespeare presents us with more than just a revenge but a three dimensional character due to the fact he has interiorly. I OFF I Nils Inward-alertness marks a recall Dread Walt n ten solute, unquestioning faith in God that Shakespearean generation inherited from the middle ages. This harmonize act in which Hamlet has found himself in is of standing on the brink of a religious past and a secular future. In his seek for moral Justification, Hamlet puts on a play that imitates the murder of King Hamlet and the ââ¬Å"wicked speedâ⬠of the remarriage of the widow ââ¬â the Queen. To Hamlet's superficial Joy, Claudia reacts for wishing ââ¬Å"some lightâ⬠. This proves to Hamlet that Claudia is the culprit of ââ¬Å"the primal eldest curse uponâ⬠. Revenge in the play works on a multi-dimensional platform as there are many reasons why Hamlet could have sought revenge. Primarily under the direction of King Hamlet's ghost for personal revenge, many undercurrents of subcons cious conflicts seethe to the surface of the conscious of Hamlet.Different ages have seen Hamlet's motives in different lights. Freudian analysis of Hamlet sees him in love with his mother and sees Claudia as the threat. This undercurrent can be seen in act 3 here he says ââ¬Å"l will speak daggers to her, but use noneâ⬠as if he would if he would have if the ghost told him not to. To further this argument, Hamlet's first soliloquy, more than half of it is devoted to his mother as ââ¬Å"she married at O most wicked speedâ⬠, ââ¬Å"but break, my heart, for I must hold my tongueâ⬠.This train of argument can be continued ââ¬â as in act 3 scene 4 sees the violent confrontation between Hamlet and Gertrude ââ¬â his mother. In this scene Hamlet acts strictly out of spontaneity. His rage is far from ââ¬Ësugar coated' as he outpour the grief burdening his heart in most shocking and vile fashion. His outburst of now exteriors interiorly is heavily centered on the à ¢â¬Å"incestuous pleasuresâ⬠of his mother and uncle. This follows close suit to the Oedipus complex ââ¬â a Freudian view of psychology that all toddlers are in love or lust with the opposite parent sex.Freud himself saw Claudia ââ¬Å"the man who shows [Hamlet] the repressed wishes of his own childhood realizedâ⬠. This means to say that the marriage of Claudia and Gertrude revoked the passions of his youthful subconscious and because he cannot define them or know what they are, he sees the need to take revenge on Claudia upon a practical yet tangible enough motive. His anger and wish for revenge it seems, is directed more towards his mother rather than Claudia. His accusations upon Gertrude follow a methodical and calculated attack in of which he compares King Hamlet to Claudia upon a spectrum of heaven and hell. He depicts his father as the ââ¬Å"Hyperfineâ⬠compared to Claudia who Hamlet calls the ââ¬Å"devilâ⬠. He even talks about the sexuality of his ow n mother ââ¬â ââ¬Å"for at your age the heyday in the blood is tameâ⬠as he cannot come to comprehend the attraction she has for Claudia at such ââ¬Å"wicked speedâ⬠. Comparing his verbal attack on Gertrude to his procrastination with Claudia it is difficult to say what Hamlet seeks revenge for.Because of the dexterity of Hamlet's inner conscious it is difficult to say whether or not Hamlet himself wishes to carry out a revenge in the first place. Having the perfect opportunity for when Claudia is praying, Hamlet dismisses it for he sees ââ¬Å"revengeâ⬠. This can be seen as an excuse as the killing would have been straight forward and efficient. Instead Hamlet superficially goes on to say that he wants to see Claudia suffer whilst he takes his revenge, ââ¬Å"when he is drunk asleep, or in rage/ Or n authenticates pleasure of his bedâ⬠.After his antic disposition, Hamlet is seen to become exactly what he was playing ââ¬â mad. Due to the consistent mani festation of existentialism within him, Hamlet becomes erratic compared to his previous finesse and idea of perfectionism. His lack of thought and scheming leads hamlet to spontaneous acts of raw emotion. If Hamlet plays the fool for strategic purposes; there are subtleties of genuine mental distress. In the last scene, Hamlet explodes into a cameo in of which he is very wise and violent at the same time.Because of the mass murder in this scene it seems that Hamlet is taking revenge against the misfortunes that destiny has drawn him and also against society itself. From the superficial simple revenge against Claudia, others become involved such as Aphelia and Polonium. With revenge playing a central theme in Hamlet, it is no wonder why William Shakespeare manifests so many twists and turns for the motives of it. Playing with our perception and ideologies, William Shakespeare ââ¬â through Hamlet will continue to fascinate us with its different psychoanalysis'.
